Dorothy Bren Halliday –
I am Gary’s sister as referred to in Linda’s book “The Lumberjack Song.” I could hardly put the book down once I started reading it. I learned much about my brother and his respect and compassions for life and the suffering in his last days and how powerful his and Linda’s love for each other and for God. It is what is leading her life onward now.

The Lumberjack Song
Grace through Hardship
by Linda Kaye Randall
As the sun sets over the lumberjack camp, he closes his eyes and starts to float away, watching the lumberjacks below go home to their families. Finally, free from confusion, fear, frustration and pain, he smiles, knowing he was well loved and on this place called Earth and rises to the Gates of Heaven. “He’s a Lumberjack and he’s o.k.”

Overview
Linda Kaye Randall’s The Lumberjack Song, Grace through Hardship (NewG Praise Productions, LLC, 2025) is a memoir about a family’s personal and heartfelt journey through the diagnosis and treatment of dementia for their husband and father. Linda, and her two daughters, Elizabeth and Jacqueline, share their inspirational and informative story of this challenging period in their lives, with the hope of helping others experiencing a similar circumstance.
Who would find this book helpful?
This book is a real example of what can happen during the treatment of dementia, placement in care facilities, and how dementia shapes not only the person facing the syndrome, but the impact it has on the individual’s family and/or caregiver.
Linda also provides several resources in this book, including a visitation preparation guide/checklist, which is meant to prepare the family/caregiver for visitation to a care facility, as well as important questions/concerns to address with doctors and for treatments.
My reflections
I found The Lumberjack Song, Grace through Hardship, engaging, genuine, and educational, from start to finish: the author’s emotional intelligence, attention to detail throughout the journey of several years, honesty, the beautiful pictures, references, and quotes throughout, and lastly the sentimental personal journal entries by Linda (as were the chapters by her two daughters).
I was moved to tears multiple times throughout the book, not only due to the emotional context, but because I knew Gary (as well as Linda and her two daughters). I experienced this journey as if I were a part of it, and knowing Gary, the man, husband, and father he was before the dementia diagnosis, certainly had an even greater impact on my feelings and reactions as I embarked on each chapter and passage.
I will forever remember Gary for his smile, personality, and love of motorcycles (which we both shared), but most of all the love he shared with Linda, and their two daughters. His presence will always be missed here on earth, and I am sure he is once again riding his motorcycles through the Heavens.

This is a beautiful book about a loving family thrust into the world of dementia after their husband/father has surgery. It illustrates many of the weaknesses of our current failing healthcare system. Beautifully and lovingly written to honor the author’s husband.

I have been really touched by this book. The story carries a strong message about perseverance, faith, and finding strength during difficult seasons of life. It’s one of those reads that feels personal. It’s like you’re sitting with someone who’s sharing real experiences and lessons they’ve learned along the way.
What stood out most to me was the theme of grace through hardship. Life doesn’t always go the way we plan, and this book does a great job of acknowledging that reality while still offering hope. There’s a comforting reminder woven throughout the pages that struggles don’t define us — they shape us. I also appreciated how the emotional moments didn’t feel overly dramatic or forced. They felt genuine.
Linda’s writing style is easy to follow, which made it a relaxing read. It’s the kind of book you could pick up for a few chapters at a time and still walk away with something meaningful to think about. There were several moments where I paused to reflect on my own experiences with the death of both my aging parents and my middle-aged, but very sick husband, and how those challenges have impacted my growth.
Another thing I really liked was the inspirational tone without it feeling preachy. It encourages resilience and faith in a natural way, which I think many readers will connect with — especially anyone who has gone through tough seasons or is currently facing one.
Overall, this is a heartfelt and encouraging book that reminds you that difficult chapters in life can still lead to beautiful outcomes. If you’re looking for something uplifting with real emotional depth, this is definitely worth reading. I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys inspirational stories about overcoming obstacles and finding purpose through adversity.
